Start with geography
One area, several distinct pieces of water.
Use established channels and current local knowledge. Prop scars, rock contact and an outgoing tide can quickly turn a fishing mistake into a safety problem.

Build the first trip
Narrow the map before choosing tackle.
Choose a nearshore zone within an easy run of the channel, note the lowest expected tide and establish a return time before fishing farther out.
Choose the water
Very shallow Gulf shelf crossed by tidal creeks and channels. Treat each water type as a separate trip until you understand how they connect.
Match the habitat
Seagrass, rock patches, marsh drains and scallop grounds. Pick one or two habitat transitions instead of trying to sample everything.
Protect the return
Confirm the launch, forecast, water level or tide, and a sheltered fallback before leaving the ramp.
