Start with geography
One area, several distinct pieces of water.
Inlet current and jetty conditions can change quickly. Keep an inside-water plan rather than forcing the inlet during an uncomfortable window.

Build the first trip
Narrow the map before choosing tackle.
Begin inside the Intracoastal or along a protected shoreline, then assess the inlet in person before committing outside.
Choose the water
Intracoastal waterway, Gulf inlet and open beach. Treat each water type as a separate trip until you understand how they connect.
Match the habitat
Jetties, docks, bridges, mangroves and sandy nearshore bottom. Pick one or two habitat transitions instead of trying to sample everything.
Protect the return
Confirm the launch, forecast, water level or tide, and a sheltered fallback before leaving the ramp.
